🚴♂️ Wicklow Town Team Celebrates Official Opening of Ireland's Longest Pump Track at The Murrough 🎉
The Wicklow Town Team opened the newest major outdoor attraction, the Murrough Pump Track, Ireland's longest pump track, located on the scenic Murrough in Wicklow Town. The highly-anticipated community amenity was officially launched last weekend drawing an enthusiastic crowd of over 100 cyclists, families, and spectators, despite the challenging Storm Claudia weather.
For the opening ceremony the Wicklow Town Team were joined by by Councillors Melanie Corrigan and Graham Richmond and Wicklow Municipal District Manager Brian Gleeson.
The idea of the Murrough Pump Track came from a member of the public who suggested it to the Wicklow Town Team as an outdoor recreational space along the Murrough.
A pump track is a circuit of continuous bumps and banked turns designed to be ridden completely by generating momentum through up and down body movements, or "pumping," instead of pedaling.
Built to Velosolutions design standards, the facility includes 280 linear metres of asphalt, making it the longest in Ireland. It is designed to cater for all abilities, featuring a dedicated 50-metre beginner track for new riders, and the country's first advanced-only line for experienced cyclists seeking an extra challenge.
Myra Porter, Chairperson of the Wicklow Town Team, highlighted the project's significance for the town:
“The opening of the Murrough Pump Track is a fantastic moment for Wicklow town and county. It’s a powerful demonstration of what we can achieve when the community, local officials, and dedicated volunteers work together. The delivery of this pump track is another great example of the commitment of the Town Team to make Wicklow Town a great place to live, work, and play. We extend our immense gratitude to everyone involved in bringing this incredible amenity to life.”
The success of the project is attributed to a collaborative effort, with special mention given to John Kelly, who initially proposed the idea, and the sustained support from the Wicklow Municipal District staff and members, as well as Wicklow County Council, who oversaw construction.
A highlight of the opening was a thrilling demonstration by cyclists from Trailbreaker, the Roundwood-based company that designed and built the track, and the energetic Fyidance Club street dancers.
