The Black Castle

The Black Castle

The ruins of a castle torn down by near-constant battle and bloodshed between warring Chieftains and Norman invaders, the Black Castle is a site worthy of an episode of Game of Thrones.

A site of major historical importance to the Wicklow community, the story of the Black Castle is one ravaged by generations of warfare and invasion. At first serving as the fortress of the Norman invader Strongbow in 1169, the Black Castle would be attacked, conquered, and attacked again over and over for hundreds of years.

The ruins of The Black Castle cling strikingly to the cliffs of the Wicklow coast and can be accessed easily from the South Quay or Castle Street.
