Don’t miss The Wicklow Town Heritage Trail this Year

The weekly guided walk of the new Wicklow Town Heritage Trail continues on Saturday 14th September and the following two Saturdays (21st and 28th), when it will conclude until Easter 2025.

There has been a guided Walk each Saturday morning since Easter. It has proven to be a growing attraction for tourists and locals with an increasing number of people who have recently moved to the town. Overall, over 500 people have taken part this year and have gained a great insight into the rich heritage and history of the town.

The organisers of the Heritage Trail have been thrilled with the growing popularity of the Heritage Trail and extend a warm welcome to all those interested in the history and heritage of the town to take part in what is a very informative trail.

This walk commences from Fitzwilliam Square at 11am each Saturday morning and will take approximately 2 hours to complete, allowing participants to spend some time at each location.

The walk this week will focus mainly on the history and heritage around the town centre including:

• St. Patrick’s Church – telling the history of its construction and its historical context.

• The ruins of the Franciscan Abbey.

• The story of Robert Halpin – his birthplace and his achievement in laying the first Trans-Atlantic cable.

On each storyboard around the town, there is a QR code which enables participants to watch a video on their phone, telling them the story of each key location. The actors featured on the videos are members of the local dramatic society, who gave their services free to this project.
