National Heritage Week runs from 15–23 August 2026, and Wicklow Town has a great programme of events offering opportunities to discover the town’s history, hear local stories and help shape its future.

Whether you're a lifelong Wicklow resident or visiting for the first time, there are plenty of ways to explore the town's heritage.

Wicklow Town Heritage Trail – Saturday 15, Tuesday 18 & Saturday 22 August

Take a guided walk through Wicklow Town and discover more than 1,500 years of history, from the arrival of St Patrick and his monks to the establishment of the Irish Free State.

The trail explores some of Wicklow's fascinating stories, including the town's invasions, the 1798 Rebellion, the events at Melancholy Lane and the maritime exploits of Captain Robert Halpin. Tours take place from 11am–1pm, departing from outside the Fáilte Ireland Office in Fitzwilliam Square. The event is free.

An additional Heritage Trail tour will also take place on Tuesday 18 August, giving people another opportunity to explore Wicklow's fascinating past.

What Was, What Is, What If – Tuesday 18 August

Drop into Fitzwilliam Square between 1pm and 4pm and share your memories, stories and ideas about Wicklow Town.

This special Heritage Week event is part of the work being undertaken by Wicklow County Council and the Wicklow Town Team on a Heritage-led Regeneration Plan and Town Centre Health Check.

Come along to talk about the buildings and places you love, what makes Wicklow town special, what could be improved and what you'd like to see for the future of the town. Everyone is welcome and no booking is required.

Wicklow Town Irish Historic Towns Atlas – Thursday 20 August

Discover how Wicklow's history is being recorded and preserved at a special talk in Wicklow Town Library & Archives at 6.30pm.

Conservator Liz D'Arcy will discuss the conservation of historic Wicklow maps and rental rolls, while Archivist Catherine Wright will introduce the Wicklow Town Irish Historic Towns Atlas project. Booking is essential for this free event.

Wicklow Head Lighthouse Open Day

The Wicklow Head Lighthouse Open Day also takes place on Sunday 16 August, 10am–4pm, offering a rare opportunity to explore this remarkable six-storey lighthouse and enjoy its spectacular coastal setting. Spaces are limited and booking is recommended.
