Sharing Ideas for Vibrant Towns — Wicklow Welcomes Delegation from Heerlen in the Netherlands

Wicklow Town Team were delighted to act as the host Town Team during a recent three-day visit by a delegation from Heerlen, Netherlands, organised by Wicklow County Council as part of the EU City-to-City Exchange Programme.

The aim of the exchange was to share best practices and explore innovative approaches to revitalising our town centres. The delegation stayed in Wicklow Town, offering a fantastic opportunity to showcase our beautiful town and highlight several Wicklow Town Team projects.

Over the course of the visit, the group explored recent developments in Wicklow Town and Newtownmountkennedy, engaging in open discussions on how to create vibrant, resilient, and inclusive communities. Together, we tackled key challenges such as vacant properties, changing retail trends, and the importance of sustainability and community engagement.

A highlight of the visit was the Town Regeneration Good Practices Seminar, where both delegations presented their experiences. Town Regeneration Officer Stephen Clarke shared insights into Ireland’s Town Centre First policy, while the Heerlen team presented their inspiring regeneration strategies.

The exchange offered valuable learning for everyone involved. Wicklow Town Team gained new perspectives and ideas for future projects, while our visitors enjoyed experiencing first-hand the spirit and community pride that define Wicklow.

We look forward to continued collaboration and to building on the insights gained — working together toward vibrant, connected, and sustainable town centres. 💚
