The Spooky Guide to Staying Safe this Halloween
It’s that time of year again. Orange leaves colour the ground, the skies begin to darken, and the wind blows a certain kind of magic through the air.
Imaginations run wild as pumpkins are carved and costumes planned – and even the most mature of us can’t resist the festive feeling when Halloween comes creeping.
But just because we’re all feeling a little bit spooky doesn’t mean we shouldn’t exercise caution when enjoying the Halloween festivities, and here’s a number of measures you can take to ensure that everyone has a thriller of a time.
Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times – The little ones should never be allowed to go trick or treating without a responsible adult, a torch for lighting the way, and a planned route for collecting those Halloween treats.
Be careful on the roads – This goes for every day of the year, but special attention should be taken on Halloween Night when plenty of ghosts and ghouls are roaming the streets. Be visible, be careful when crossing the road, and drive with great caution.
Ensure your costume (child or adult) is flame resistant – Look out for the CE mark on any costumes or masks to ensure that the material is made to the Irish and European standard. The mark doesn’t mean that your costume won’t catch fire, but it will resist burning and allow more time for the flame to be extinguished.
Lock any flammable garden possessions away – Speaking of bonfires, all businesses and homeowners are urged to lock away any flammable materials they might have on their property as many items are being stolen and stockpiled for bonfires on the lead up to Halloween.
Keep your pets safe – We all love our pets, but most pets aren’t too fond of Halloween. What might be all fun and games to us can potentially be an overwhelming sensory experience for animals, so please ensure they’re safe, happy, and cosy at home.
And now that a few golden rules have been established – don’t forget to have fun this Halloween.
It comes but once a year.
