The Enduring Appeal of The Murrough
One of Wicklow Town’s longest-standing features and attractions is its 15km coastal wetland walk known as The Murrough. The subject of many a painter and the favourite route of many a walker, The Murrough is the largest wetland on the East Coast and is famous for the variety of wildlife that calls it home.
Coming from the Irish word ‘murbach’, which means salt marsh by the sea, The Murrough has been a place of great importance to Wicklow locals for generations, either as a place for walking, personal reflection, relaxing, training, bird-watching and much more.
Coastal erosion has at times wreaked havoc on The Murrough over the years and efforts have been made to protect and preserve it against any further degradation.
One of these efforts has been the ongoing establishment of a coastal greenway which would shape the landscape into a more hospitable area for walking which would also link Wicklow Town to Greystones with one long coastal walkway.
A petition to establish the east coast greenway has reached well over 15k signatures and could be on track to begin following the findings of a coastal erosion study to confirm the feasibility of the project.
