Keeping the kids entertained is a daily struggle, especially when the school term is over and they suddenly have a lot of free time on their hands. And while video games, television, and iPads might be a quick-fix to the summertime blues, there is no substitute for getting outdoors and getting active for a happier and healthier life for your kids.

Here are some of the best places to take the kids when the itch for fun becomes too strong.

 Wicklow’s Playgrounds

Wicklow has two playgrounds and both are fully-equipped with safe and fun play equipment suitable for most ages. The first is The Ballynerrin Playground in St. Laurence’s Park, while a Viking-themed playground is found on The Murrough.

 Skate Park

Located right next to the playground on The Murrough is Wicklow Town’s skate park. Popular with skateboarders, BMXers, and virtually anyone else on a set of wheels, the Wicklow Town skate park is a right-of-passage for kids with a need for speed.

 Diamond Bowl & Kidzone

With fun and colourful play areas for different age groups, 12 lanes of ten-pin bowling, and arcade machines galore – The Diamond Bowl & Kidzone on Bollarney North in Wicklow Town has everything to keep the boredoms at bay.

 Wicklow Gaol

Wicklow Gaol is where history and fun meet. An educational and thoroughly enjoyable tour through the hallowed Wicklow Gaol will get them out and encourage their interest in history.

 Beaches

The Travelhawk Beach, overlooked by the historical black castle, has always been a popular destination to take the kids on a warm day. Don’t forget your beach towels!
