The Round Ireland Race, Wicklow Sailing Club’s biannual event showcasing talent from home and much further abroad, is taking place for the 21st time in the 40 years since it first set sail.

And this year’s event receives a huge boost with a sponsorship from international wind farm developer - SSE Renewables.

The voluntary-driven Wicklow Sailing Club was founded in 1950 and has been intgral in preserving Wicklow Town’s seafaring taditions for the modern day with their many events, competitons, and the hive of activity they have created on Wicklow’s harbour. By the late 70s, the club had become hugely popular with swathes of new members and its very own place carveded into the town’s culture.

On Saturday 28th of June 1980, the club held their very first Round Ireland Race, a traditional that continues to today. A fleet of 13 varied small-to-medium sized cruiser-racers set sail from Wicklow Town and would travel south in the first ever Round Ireland Race. That’s a whole 704 miles, if you’re keeping count.

So, who’s looking forward to the 21st Round Ireland Race? We know we are.
